Slavery/Race - Measurement:
- two maps, each 25 x 18, on sheet 59 x 42 (centimeters, height x width)
- Notes:
- This dramatic poster argues for the need to "Free Palestine - End the Israeli Occupation" by comparing the situation in Israel to South African Apartheid. The map on the left shows "Bantustans," so-called "homelands" established for South African and Namibian blacks under the policy of apartheid. The map on the right uses the same word to describe lands to be occupied by Palestinians after completion of the "Barrier" identified as "under construction" in February 2005 (the presumed year the poster was published).
This poster demonstrates that in persuasive cartography, as in other areas, the whole is sometimes greater than the individual parts. Each of the two maps illustrated, standing alone, would be difficult to understand by any viewer without detailed background knowledge of the politics and facts on the ground at that time and in that place. But the message of this poster is clearly and powerfully communicated by the two maps side-by-side, each delineating geographic areas of enforced ethnic separation, and the common reference to "Apartheid" - a policy by then universally condemned and long abandoned in South Africa itself. A group call the "US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation" continues to use the phrase "Apartheid - Wrong for South Africans, Wrong for Palestinians." http://www.endtheoccupation.org, accessed June 28, 2020.
The Collection includes a number of maps related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Search > "israel* AND palest*".
