While studying in Europe and painting in New York, Bishop was taught by two men who worked in the Art Deco style of the 1920s: French sculptor Alfred Janniot and American muralist Ezra Winter. In this treatment of Van Buskirk's Gulf, one can see their influence brought to bear during the artist's regionalist period.
