This late October picnic scene, threatened by an approaching storm and the promise of eventual winter, was a reflection by the artist on aging. As she saw herself and those around her getting older, she drew those closest to her together in this somber scene of harvest celebration. We know that the artist and her husband, Morris Bishop, are among the picnickers. Their friends include: Lisa and Richard Robinson (of Oxford, England), Harriett and Paul Oleary, Richard and Bella Parmenter, Eleanor and Pepperell Wheeler, and W.H. Burkholder.
