- This is a plaster cast of a bust of a 1905 bronze original bust by German-born American artist Max Bachmann. Lincoln's head is turned subtly to his right. He casts his serious, contemplative gaze slightly up. His pupils are indicated by hollows and eyebrows are full. His hair is sculpted in bushy tufts around a long face and large ears. Below high cheekbones are hollows and pronounced creases. Lips are pursed and the characteristic mole appears above the right side of the mouth. Lincoln wears a collared shirt with bow tie, jacket, and overcoat. The work seemingly depicts Lincoln in middle age, as evidenced by skin wrinkles. He is sculpted here beardless, suggesting the image represents Lincoln before his term as president began in 1860. Several originals were produced in the initial bronze casting of this Bachmann work.
