- Description:
- This is a cast of a portrait head of Julius Caesar in the Antikensammlung in Berlin. Caesar looks straight ahead with an almost wistful expression. Short locks of wavy hair surround his squared face and age is indicated by furrows in his forehead and cheeks. His prominent nose displays a subtle hump. The original head is modern and is, as of 1829, attached to an otherwise headless Julio-Claudian period togate statue that was discovered in 1825. This cast has been produced as a bust with bare upper chest. The head, presumably passed off as antique (?), was held by the French collector Melchior de Polignac (d. 1742) and was purchased by King Frederick II of Prussia after Polignac's death.
