- Description:
- This is a cast of a bronze statuette of a standing, nude Zeus. The type that this statuette copies has been hypothesized to be Zeus of Sikyon, a full-size bronze by Lysippos that stood in the agora of that ancient Peloponnesian city. Several copies of the type exist. The nude god stands in contrapposto with his weight on his right leg and his left leg advanced and slightly bent. He tilts his head to his right and casts his gaze slightly upward. A full head of curly hair, parted at the middle with a muted anastole, and a similarly full beard surround his face. Zeus's left arm is raised and he probably held a scepter in his left hand. In his lowered, projecting right hand, he likely held a lightning bolt. In this cast, the left arm is heavily damaged and shows the wire support beneath the plaster. The index finger of the right hand is missing. The cast has been painted a greenish gray color to mimic the bronze of the original. The statuette is alternatively identified as Poseidon (see Frederiksen and Smith).
