- Description:
- This is a cast of a bronze statuette of Poseidon or possibly Zeus. The deity stands in contrapposto placing his weight on his straightened right leg. He is nude except for the chlamys draped over his left shoulder that extends to his knee. He also wears a laurel wreath on his head with fillets that fall along his shoulders. His hair is curly and he has a full, bushy beard. He turns his head slightly to his right and looks skyward with a calm expression.
The original from which this cast was made remains to be located, but it is almost identical to a statuette labeled as Poseidon Hippios in the British Museum (no. 1867,0508.743
Bronze 960), identified as such by the horse's head and probable trident held by the figure. The attributes held by the deity represented here are missing along with the lower portions of his arms, seemingly in the original, making his identity slightly less clear. - Notes:
