- Description:
- This is a cast of the bust of a marble statue of Asclepius in the Louvre, a Roman copy of an original attributed to the fourth century BCE Greek sculptor Timotheos, who was jointly responsible for sculpture at Ascelepius' sanctuary at Epidauros. Asclepius turns his head slightly to the right (proper) and looks serenely ahead with thick-lidded, almond-shaped eyes. Longish hair and full beard surround the god's face and small mouth in waves and loose ringlets. A thick, twisted band tops his head. The bust includes the upper chest with pectoral cleft indicated, as well as the upper shoulders. The second century CE original was restored in the 18th century, probably by the workshop of sculptor Bartolomeo Cavaceppi. It retains those restorations to present day.
