- This Cold War map highlights the danger to U.S. interests of the Soviet Union’s ability to exploit the turmoil arising out of the growing Iranian Revolution. This cover illustration shows a giant Russian bear looming over a vast area stretching from the horn of Africa to Pakistan.
In January 1979, almost on the day this issue of Time Magazine was published, the Shah of Iran left his country for good, unable to contain the sweeping unrest that had grown dramatically over the previous year and suffering from incurable cancer. Within weeks, the monarchy was dissolved. The Iranian hostage crisis was still ten months in the future.
The title of the Time cover story derived from a statement in December by President Carter’s National Security advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski: “An arc of crisis stretches along the shores of the Indian Ocean, with fragile social and political structures in a region of vital importance to us threatened with fragmentation. The resulting political chaos could well be filled by elements hostile to our values and sympathetic to our adversaries.” The Time article noted Soviet influence over many of the region’s states - including Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, S. Yemen and Ethiopia - and detailed the resulting danger to the U.S.
