This is a standard Rand McNally World map repurposed and overprinted as an advertisement for “Rea & Co. Pork and Beef Packers, Pittsburg.” Advertisements appear in relatively vacant spaces, three in the open sea and one in Greenland: “Cold Test Miners’ Oil is a Ready Seller;” “REA’s Yankee Pig Hams Lead All the Rest;” and “Matchless Pure Lard Made From Yankee Pigs. The best on the Market.”
The verso, ID #2384.02, contains two additional, smaller standard Rand McNally maps, West Indies and Cuba, also overprinted with ads: “Home Dressed Beef, Mutton and Pork;” “Yankee Pig Hams, the Finest on the Market;” and the address of Rea & Co. in Pittsburg.
The copyright date on the original map is 1892, but it is known to have appeared in Rand McNally atlases in 1897 and 1898 and may have been used later.
