Notes:
This map, a full page ad in the Daily Times of Niles, Ohio, promotes the reelection campaign of incumbent Mayor William P. Kearney. Specifically, the map highlights the “Civic Improvements” achieved during his term, namely, the repaving of the city’s streets: “More than 6 miles of street paving completed. More than 2 miles under construction and pending. You need merely observe the above map to find the evidence - more improvements in 21 months than has been done in 21 previous years.”
The text also claims success by Mayor Kearney in areas not shown on the map. One relates to “Economy,” reducing the city’s costs: “No padded payrolls. No useless jobs!” It also mentions progress in the city’s “Humanitarianism . . . brought more than $1,000,000 in WPA payrolls to Niles,” providing “a means of livelihood” for more than 500 families.
This ad appeared four days before election day. Whether or not it helped his campaign, Mayor Kearney was reelected; his obituary 16 years later reported that “He was mayor for two terms starting in 1938.” Daily Reporter [Dover, Ohio], October 4, 1955, p.2.
