This image shows a dark, fire-related oval soil stain (Feature 7) soon after it was first exposed after removal of overlying plow-mixed soil. Although it is difficult to see in this picture, the dark stain is below and slightly to the right of the black-and-white north arrow. The position of this feature within the site suggests it may have been a central hearth inside House 4. Central hearths are relatively rare finds on plowed Haudenosaunee sites, since most of them originally were shallow enough so that plow action destroys them. Kurt Jordan, Archaeologist
