This is a fragment of red slate manufacturing debris. There are rough score-and-snap marks on two edges and a failed perforation attempt visible on the third edge. This type of stone likely originated from deposits on the New York-Vermont border. Finding manufacturing debris in the Finger Lakes region means that the stone was imported and worked on-site.
