- Notes:
- A satirical map encouraging - and warning - young writers. Those who aspire to literary success might take hope from the Geyser of Enthusiasm and the Wellspring of Inspiration. They might look to walk the Road of Glory, passing the Temple of Mutual Admiration to the Perfumed Hill, and from there across the bridge to the Gold Coast of Success and entry to Fort Goncourt. (The Prix Goncourt, the greatest literary prize in France, had been established 10 years earlier.)
But everywhere are hazards: the Extinct Volcano of Misunderstood Genius, the Unhealthy Marshes of Envy, the Groves of Intrique, the Glacier of Indifference, the Lost Corner of Overlooked Talents, the Hospice of Overdue Manuscripts (and behind it, the Great Ovens), the Valley of Failures, the Immense Steppe of Uncultivated Minds, the Clan of Critics (with its Tribe of Barbed Arrows), and throughout the land, the River of Oversight.
The collection includes a number of allegorical maps giving advice on the conduct of life. See Subjects > Religion and Subjects > Conduct of Life. The religious ones, and some of the others, like ID #1172 (“The Road to Success,” also published in 1913), seem primarily intended to encourage specific “positive” conduct. The Republic of Letters, on the other hand, appears mostly designed to caution and satirize young writers.
The collection includes a number of maps in the art deco style of the time. For others, Search > "deco".
