La Victoria de Franco. Hechos Culminantes de la Guerra de Liberacion de Espana 1936-1939. [The Victory of Franco. Highlights of the Spanish War of Liberation 1936-1939.]
This striking art deco poster map celebrates the victory of the Nationalist forces - and particularly General (soon to be Generalissimo) Francisco Franco - in the “War of Spanish Liberation” over the Republican forces.
At the lower left is a detailed legend. Major cities whose names are in blue are those “where the national uprising triumphed,” while those named in red “were subject to Marxist domination.” The dates on which important cities were “liberated” by Nationalist forces are shown by a striped symbol in the red and yellow colors of the Spanish flag. Dates and places of other “important victories” are shown by striped, color-coded symbols: yellow, red, grey and blue for 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1939, respectively.
The mapmaker, Francisco Lopez Rubio, was a well-know graphic artist and cartoonist, and his illustrations fill the map. Many of these feature military activities: tanks, trucks, artillery, warplanes, ships, and soldiers fighting, guarding and resting. Other illustrations include rail lines, bridges, tunnels, significant monuments and historical buildings, cultural figures and the like. At the left is a list of 43 officers identified as “Heroes of the Crusade.” At the lower right is a series of eight inset maps portraying the advance of the Nationalist forces over time: “Thirty-two months of war - The Red Spot on Spain reduced before the advance of Franco’s armies.”
This poster was one of a series of seven maps illustrating the course of the war produced by Cartografia Hispanica under Rubio and Manuel L. Ortega. The date is estimated.
The collection includes a number of maps in the art deco style of the time. For others, Search > "deco".
