- Notes:
- This map, like many other maps of the British Empire, uses pictorial and other persuasive techniques to enhance the apparent size and power of the Empire. The text below the map says that it “shows the British Empire as it is today, with types of some of its citizens who include men of all races - white, black, yellow, red, and brown.” The large figures of these “citizens” fill empty spaces on those parts of the world that are not part of the Empire - not only the Pacific Ocean, but the U.S., South America, Russia and China. As a result, the entire world is either colored black (the geographical Empire) or filled with British “citizens.”
The Children’s Encyclopaedia (later Encyclopedia) was first published as an eight-volume set in England in 1910, and later editions were produced for many years in both England and the U.S. The exact date of this map is unknown but estimated to be about 1920. For another persuasive map of the British Empire from the Children’s Encyclopaedia - also using pictorial elements to enhance the apparent scope of the Empire - see ID #1167, “The Flags of a Free Empire, Showing the Emblems of British Power Throughout the World.” For other instances of persuasive cartography used to support the Empire, see Subjects > Imperialism.
