- Notes:
- This poster was published in 1951 as part of the effort to counter the spread of communism in France. Two military officers stand looking at two maps on adjoining panels. To the left is a map of Free Europe, largely in green, with a label showing 61 Army Divisions. To the right is a map of the Eastern Bloc, the Soviet Union and China, in red, with 265 Army Divisions. The Western officer is slender and contemplative, with his hand on his chin. His Soviet counterpart on the right is stocky and aggressively postured with his arms behind his back and a scowl on his face. The poster asks, “Which is the Side of Peace?”
The poster is one in a series published and widely distributed by a little-known organization, "Paix et Liberté." Throughout the 1950s, this organization "participated in American psychological warfare campaigns and the mobilization of Europeans for the anti-communist cause, mixing covert actions with open propaganda." It was "first and foremost, a two-dimensional state-private network" organized "to fight against the dangers of communism" and "to wage the ideological Cold War." Not surprisingly, "the exact circumstances and dynamics behind the creation of Paix et Liberté remain uncertain." Ludwig 2014, 81.
