- Notes:
- This dramatic map poster illustrates three major objectives of Soviet propaganda in the 1950s: to reaffirm pride in the nation’s World War II valor, to foster belief in its military strength, and to glorify its leader, Josef Stalin.
Stalin had spoken in Moscow on November 6, 1943, at a celebration of the 26th anniversary of the October Revolution. His speech proclaimed that there had been a “radical turn in the course of the war” during the previous year. The Red Army had proven that it could successfully attack in summer as well as winter; it had killed and captured many of the enemy’s most experiences forces while strengthening its own; and it had seriously damaged Germany not only militarily, but politically and economically. Stalin 1946, 113-119.
This poster was published in 1952 and takes its title directly from Stalin’s words: “1943: The Year of the Radical Change in the Course of the War.” The map shows the Soviet forces in bold red arrows driving the Germans away from Moscow and recapturing the Ukraine. Beside the map, and equally prominent, is a classic work of Socialist Realist art: a heroic portrait of Stalin in field uniform, intently focused on the battlefield maps before him. Two quotes from Stalin complete the picture.
This map is part of a monumental work by the Soviet historian V. I. Lebedev, the 14-volume “History of the Soviet Union: An Album of Visual Aids,” 1939-1952. This map is number 28 in volume 13 of that work, “The Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union, 1941-1945.”
This poster is an excellent example of Socialist Realism. For a very different development of Soviet poster art, from the period of the “thaw” after Nikita Khrushchev’s 1956 denunciation of Stalin, see ID #2321, Agit-Plakat (1960).
