- This 1863 birds-eye view of the United States from a popular German publication looks north at the globe from a point above the Gulf of Mexico, foreshortening distances to the north. As a result, the apparent relative size of the slave states is artificially enlarged compared to the northern states. Each of these states (apart from Georgia, inexplicably) is labeled with an “S.” This map bears a strong resemblance to an 1861 view of the same area, "Civil War in America, Read's Grand Panoramic View of the Free & Confederated Slave States of America." See https://bostonraremaps.com/inventory/a-remarkable-civil-war-birds-eye-view-of-the-united-states/, accessed July 15, 2018.
Germany and its predecessors have historically been among those most opposed to slavery, dating to the Sachsenspiegel, the legal code of the Holy Roman Empire. This map appeared in the Illustrierte Zeitung of Leipzig, one of the most progressive German cities of the 19th century. And German-Americans overwhelmingly supported the north and fought for the Union during the war.
For a map urging the German-Americans of Pennsylvania to support John Fremont - the candidate of the new Republican party - in the 1856 Presidential election, see ID #1059, Die Zukunft Amerika's durch die Demokratie: Eine Uebersicht der Freien, Sklaven= und zur Sklaverei bestimmten Staaten [America’s Future Through Democracy–An Overview of the Free, Slaves, and Slavery for the States to be Determined.]
