- This cold war map, “Our vast home,” is the dominant feature of a folding brochure distributed by the Soviet Union at “Expo 58,” the 1958 Brussels Universal and International Exhibition. It highlights the nation’s industrial growth, particularly power stations, steel mills and coal mines. Text at the lower right make the point that since 1913 the production of electric power in the USSR had grown from 2,000 million kilowatt hours to 192,000, and steel production had increased elevenfold, compared to threefold in the U.S. Text at the upper left says that “There is no bigger country than the Soviet Union.” At the upper right is an excerpt from the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. The verso, ID #2311.02, contains photographs and extensive text, with headings including “From Wooden Plough to Sputnik,” “Wonders in the Steppe,” “Pleasant Problems,” and “We Have Everything.”
It’s interesting to compare this Soviet map with the map of the United States featured on the brochure distributed by the American delegation at the same Exhibition, “United States - The Land and The People,” ID #1360. The American map focuses on the multi-national, multi-cultural people of America, who “stem from countries and national origins throughout the world. But . . . share certain great traditions of America - freedom, equality, individual rights - taught in the home, the church, and the schools."
