New York City - Measurement:
- 28 x 22 sheet (centimeters, height x width)
- Notes:
- This birds-eye view of New York served double-duty as promotional material. It was first produced in 1879 by Root & Tinker, “a prolific New York City publisher of trade journals, separately issued prints, broadsides and trade cards . . . that could be imprinted with company names to be used as advertising promotions.” https://www.georgeglazer.com/maps/newyorkmaps/rogerspeetnyc.html, accessed November 5, 2017. This map was widely used at the time and in later years to advertise Rogers, Peet & Co., “Wholesale and Retail Clothiers, Broadway, Prince & Mercer Streets,” whose building (and flag) are prominently marked at the center of the map. A grid at the top (A-P) and right (1-18) of the map provide coordinates for locating a variety of “objects of interest,” from Castle Garden and City Hall to Central Park and Long Island Sound.
The verso contains a detailed “Strangers’ Guide to New York,” in very small print. There are sections on the City’s history, geography, means of transportation, locations of numerous “trades,” principal sights, and “How to See New York in One Week.” And of course, there is a picture of the Rogers, Peet building (and flag) with the company’s name in red. The entire sheet folded down to 3 x 5-1/2 inches so it could fit easily in a pocket or bag.
When the map was first produced, the space inside the top neat line was empty sky. In this copy, published in 1882, the original map has been overprinted with an advertisement in that space for “The very BEST EXCURSION of the year to NEW YORK CITY” by the Lehigh Valley Railroad, scheduled to leave Sayre, Pa. at 4:30 am on October 3, 1882. On the verso, the excursion promoters overprinted the Rogers, Peet building and name with their own red text at a 90 degree angle.
