Allegorical

- Notes:
- This satirical map was a promotional flyer issued by Wemple, Ellerson & Co. of Danville, Va., for its "Woman's Heart" brand chewing tobacco. The "Isle of Man" at the center is entirely surrounded by the "Ocean of Love." Numerous geographical areas are named for supposed elements of the "Woman's Heart," mostly unflattering. The lands of "Faith" and "Virtue," for example, are bordered by "Insincerity," "Prevarication," the "Plain of Ill-Temper," the "Volcano of Fury," “Revenge," and "Love of Flattery." The text verso lauds the "Fine Henry County Leaf, its flavor unsurpassed," and reports that "All who have tried the 'WOMAN'S HEART' are delighted, and highly commend its merits.”
For an earlier forerunner of this map, see ID #2529, "The Open Country of Woman’s Heart" (1846) and the accompanying notes. For a modern take on the same theme, see ID #1362, “Geographical Guide to a Man's Heart with Obstacles and Entrances Clearly Marked. Geographical Guide to a Woman's Heart Emphasizing Points of Interest to the Romantic Traveler” (1960). See also Subjects > Romance/Love/Marriage.
Wemple, Ellerson was a very successful Virginia firm, originally founded in 1869. At about the time this flyer was produced, the company “handled from three to five million pounds of leaf annually, shipping to manufacturers throughout the United States and in foreign countries.” Taylor 1915, 993. The mapmaker, “E.P. Beadles,” was a dentist in Danville.
For another example of promotional materials for 19th century tobacco companies focused on the interests of their predominantly-male clientele. See ID #1087, “Old Honesty Non-Partisan Political Map Showing Presidential Vote of 1880 and other Election Statistics, 1884” (only men could vote).
