- Description on back: "FIRST CORNELL INAUGURATION, Oct. 7, 1868--Artists' conception of how Library Hall may have looked at the inauguration of Cornell University's first president, Andrew Dickson White, who is at podium giving his inaugural address. To his immediate left is Lt. Gov. Stewart L. Woodford, long-time friend of the University, who administered the oath of office; and seated before him is Ezra Cornell, founder of the University, who roused himself from his sickbed to attend the ceremony. Standing beside the podium, notes in hand, is George William Curtis, professor of literature, who later that day called upon God to bless the ship, builder, captain, faculty crew, and undergraduate passengers. Other faculty members pictured attending the ceremony are, at left, Charles F. Hartt, professor of geology; Louis Agassiz, non-resident professor of natural history, and (seated) George C. Caldwell, professor of agricultural chemistry. On the far right is William C. Cleveland, Cornell's first professor of civil engineering. Also present at Inauguration, but not pictured here, were Prof. W.C. Russel, modern languages and history, who spoke for the faculty, and Chancellor John V.L. Pruyn of the University of the State of New York. (Artists are Victoria Roman and Murray Zimiles.) -end-"
