- 10 pages. Sickle and Hammer. Newsletter of the Hirsh Lekert Shuln (School) which are now part of the Ordn Schools. Contents: The Soviet Union; November, 1917; The October Revolution; Comrade Lenin, etc. A description of a train trip to a new cooperative settlement, for Jews who had never worked the land before. Articles and poems are fewer and longer than in some other school magazines. Cover graphic drawing depicts a hammer and sickle being held up by an arm extending from skyscrapers.
- Notes:
- The Jewish People’s Fraternal Order was the largest ‘national’ section of the International Workers Order (IWO) which focused on cultural awareness and celebration, mutual support especially in health insurance coverage, and anti-fascist activities. The IWO also gave particular emphasis to supporting the rights and interests of African Americans. Documents include language and representations which comprise the historical record and should not be interpreted to mean that Cornell University or its staff endorse or approve of negative representations or stereotypes presented.
