- Sickle and Hammer is the newsletter of the Hirsh Lekert Shuln (Schools), of the Umpartayishe Yidisher Kinder Shuln. Number Three, published by the children of the Hirsh Lekert Children's School. 1929 Detroit. School newsletter, 22 pages. Dated October-November 1929. The cover graphic shows young men gesturing to the hammer and sickle symbol. Translated Summary: "Appears every two months" with a letter from the editors expressing the hope that future issues will be more timely. The children's essays range from the overtly political, including a workers life, to essays about airplanes, happenings in Palestine and the Lieibknecht club and constitution. The cover shows the stamp of Kalman Marmor.

- The "Umpartayishe" or unaffiliated schools were the subset of Workmen's Circle schools that would later break away and mainly become the Ordn Shuln.
The Jewish People’s Fraternal Order was the largest ‘national’ section of the International Workers Order (IWO) which focused on cultural awareness and celebration, mutual support especially in health insurance coverage, and anti-fascist activities. The IWO also gave particular emphasis to supporting the rights and interests of African Americans.
