Jewish Lodges - Description:
- 2 pages. Date from handwritten note added top left. The redacted text is likely for a newspaper article or a fundraising flyer or brochure. The choice of Jewish heroes for whom tanks will be named is interesting: Bar Kokhba, Yehuda Halevi, Judah Maccabee, Boruch [Baruch] Spinoza, Heinrich Heine, Sholem Aleichem, Mendele Mokher-Sefarim [Mokher-Sforim], Y. L. Peretz, Morris Winchevsky [Vintshevski], Asher Schwarzman, and Naftali Botwin. Then adds names from the current War. The item titled "Let the Jews of the World Answer with 1000 Tanks and 500 Airplanes!" may be an earlier draft of this piece.
- Notes:
- The Jewish People’s Fraternal Order was the largest ‘national’ section of the International Workers Order (IWO) which focused on cultural awareness and celebration, mutual support especially in health insurance coverage, and anti-fascist activities. The IWO also gave particular emphasis to supporting the rights and interests of African Americans. Documents include language and representations which comprise the historical record and should not be interpreted to mean that Cornell University or its staff endorse or approve of negative representations or stereotypes presented.
