Fraternal Orders- Lodges, Activities - Description:
- 2 pages. Regarding the petition by the U.S. Attorney General that the I.W.O. register as a "Communist Front" organization under the provisions of the McCarran Act. Donner, Kinoy, and Perlin advise that it is not necessary to register at this point in time since an adverse decision can be appealed all the way to the Supreme Court. The firm also states "It is our legal opinion after a study of the legislation that the McCarran Act is in complete violation of the Constitution." (2)
- Notes:
- The Jewish People’s Fraternal Order was the largest ‘national’ section of the International Workers Order (IWO) which focused on cultural awareness and celebration, mutual support especially in health insurance coverage, and anti-fascist activities. The IWO also gave particular emphasis to supporting the rights and interests of African Americans. Documents include language and representations which comprise the historical record and should not be interpreted to mean that Cornell University or its staff endorse or approve of negative representations or stereotypes presented.
