- Philoctetes is either being bitten or about ot be bitten by a serpent during his expedition to retrieve an altar for Jason. Philoctetes is holding a bow in his left hand, and his back is bent and his head is down, in the attitude of one searching for something. His right hand is reaching out toward the altar, at the base of which, the serpent is lying, ready to bite his foot.
