- Notes:
- This map appears in a 4-page pamphlet published by the Anti-Saloon League of America in 1919, after the requisite number of states had ratified the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, imposing nation-wide Prohibition. The text below celebrates "the consummation of more than twenty-five years of effort on the part of the Anti-Saloon League, representing as it has the moral and religious forces of the nation" as well as "the greatest victory for moral reform in America since the Declaration of Independence." The numbers on each state indicate the order of ratification, and data on the verso provides details on each state's vote. (Because ratification is required by only three-quarters of the states, and there were 48 states in 1919, all those above number 36 were purely for political show.) The ratification by almost every state conveys the impression of virtual unanimity, a national consensus in support of Prohibition - a notion soon put to rest by the pervasive disdain for the law and willingness to ignore it. Fourteen years later, Prohibition was repealed by the 21st Amendment.
The collection includes a number of other Prohibition-related maps; see Subjects > Alcohol. For another map celebrating ratification, see ID #1206 (1919).
