- Notes:
- A railroad promotional map and brochure aimed primarily at the large number of German immigrants seeking to move west from Cincinnati. Many such brochures were published during this time period, but this one is unusual in that the entire verso is in German.
One side of the brochure is dominated by the map and promotional legends:
"There are rich, central, cheap lands on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway, six navigable rivers cross the land grant, which embraces varieties of soils, timbers and metals. Wheat, cotton, corn, grasses, fruits, vegetables and tobacco are grown with remarkable success and profit. Moderate climate, choice markets, railroads and rivers are to be secured at cheap rates and on easy terms."
"The greater the number of property holders, the purer the people, and the safer our liberties in a free government."
"The railway company that opens up a new country affording cheap homes to the people, spreads happiness and becomes a public benefit."
Detailed information is provided about the railroad's stations and offices in Missouri and Arkansas, and there are two Ohio agent stamps on the map, those of N.R. Warwick and Henry H. Hannan.
The verso if the map is dense with additional promotional material, entirely in German apart from a symbol of four intertwined horns of plenty with the phrase "Rich Central Lands Cheap."
The date is estimated based on the fact that Hannan died in 1879 and had apparently only been involved in the railroad for a short time before his death.
For other promotional railroad maps, including some using deceptive techniques, see Subject > Railroads.
