- An overview map from an unclassified assessment by the Department of Defense, published in 1986, three years before the revolutions in Poland and Czechoslovakia and the fall of the Berlin wall. The map uses extensive symbols and text to show the location and extent of Soviet forces: nuclear missiles, bombers tactical aircraft, ground forces air defenses and naval forces.
According to the Preface by the Secretary of Defense, this DoD publication "provides a current, authoritative assessment of Soviet global, theater, and conventional force developments, of the doctrine guiding these developments, and of the structure dedicated to supporting the Soviet Armed Forces. This year's edition details Soviet noncompliance with arms control agreements and the threat to peace posed by the USSR's role in regional conflicts" in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Angola, Ethiopia, and Nicaragua. The Secretary also noted that the publication "reports on US policies and programs and those measures we and our allies have undertaken to meet the continuing Soviet challenge," including "steps being taken to modernize our nuclear deterrent, the capabilities of our conventional forces, an our research efforts within the Strategic Defense Initiative" (missile defense).
