- A large, English-language propaganda poster issued by the Germans in April 1944, pointing out to British and American troops that their advance up the Italian peninsula had been literally slower than the pace of a garden snail.
The allies had landed at Salerno in September 1943, and had been slowed in the fight to move north by terrain, weather and fierce German resistance. Casualties had been heavy, and the text notes that the allies had gained only 180 kilometers in 191 days, while a snail would have traveled 320 kilometers in the same time. (In fact, as the Victoria & Albert has pointed out, the German arithmetic was wrong; the snail would have covered only 220 kilometers - albeit still more than the allies. http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O118146/its-a-long-way-to-poster-unknown/, accessed July 29, 2016.) Based on the style of the poster, the unknown artist was probably French. Ibid.
The same point - with gruesome images and pointed casualty statistics - was made by a small German leaflet published at about the same time; see ID #1323, Speaking of Timetables.
