Notes:
These cards ("Cartoleria," or stationery) celebrating the Italian conquest of Ethiopia in 1936, are dated 9 Maggio XIV, May 9, 1937 (in the 14th year of Mussolini's rule, which began in October 1922). Mussolini frequently used cartographic images in support of the actions of the fascist state. See Minor 1999. For similar images, see ID #2203.
The legend on the top map translates: "The Italian people have created the Empire with their blood, will fertilize it with their work, and will defend it against anyone with their weapons. In this certainty supreme lifted up, Legionäre, insignia, iron and hearts, to salute fifteen centuries later the reappearance of the Empire on the Fatali Hills of Rome."
The legend on the bottom map translates: "We are ready to defend our brilliant victory with the same fearless and relentless decision with which we conquered."
