- This allegorical map by Al Hirschfeld is "a history of our very own red-white-and-blue Communist Party, up to that time." Hirschfeld 1999, 61. It illustrated an article in Fortune Magazine on the Communist Party of the U.S. It tracks the "Communist Party Line Railroad" from 1919, through various ups and downs to "a hairpin curve" in 1935 when members were given "a new set of tactics: support Roosevelt, oppose Fascism, spread out on as many tracks as possible through established labor unions and liberal organizations." And finally, it shows "The last curve (1939)" when the Hitler and Stalin trains shook ands and the CPLRR "turned a loop-the-loop into the Nazi-Soviet merger, jarring all of its comrade's back teeth, dumping most of the previous line."
Hirschfeld remarked later that he "spent a lot of time on this drawing for Life Magazine, largely because the research was endless." ibid. Don't look for the "Nina;" Hirschfeld's daughter had not yet been born.
