- Notes:
- A promotional map for the missionary activities of the United Church of Canada - overprinted on a promotional map for the Canadian Pacific Railway!
Red lines on the underlying map mark the world-wide routes of the Canadian Pacific "Railway and Steamships." At the top right and left are illustrations, titled in red, of the "Spirit of the Atlantic" and "Spirit of the Pacific." Below the map, also in red, is the Canadian Pacific's punch line: "The World's Greatest Travel System." In short, a typical promotional railroad map.
But this version of the map has been repurposed by the United Church of Canada, which acknowledges at the bottom of the page: "This up to date map is an appreciated gift of the Canadian Railway Company." The map has been overlaid with a great deal of new text, also in red, to show how "MISSIONARIES OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA Encircle the World Preaching, Teaching, Healing." Ten areas of the world are identified as sites of the Church's missions, from Canada and Trinidad to Africa, India and China. And the overprinting advertises the sale of materials to support missionary work: "Graded Missionary Literature, Pageants and Plays, Costumes and Curios, Maps, Pictures, Lantern Slides and Other Helps." The verso (ID #2129.02) is a remarkably detailed catalog of these supporting materials, organized by geographic area and age group, with ordering information.
The date is estimated based on the publications on verso.
