- This map celebrates the "Palace Revolution" that overthrew the longtime communist dictator of Bulgaria, Todor Zhivkov, on November 19, 1989, the day after the Berlin wall came down. The title of the map, in Bulgarian, is "45 Years Are Enough," a popular protest song of the time. One of the lyrics from the song, "The time is ours," became the slogan of the Bulgarian democratic movement. Kancheva 2009.
The legend at the lower right reads "Map of the Communist Concentration Camps and Prisons." The building shown at the site of the capital, Sofia, is the former headquarters of the Bulgarian Communist Party. (The five stars below it suggest there were five "Concentration Camps and Prisons" in the capital.) When a crowd tried to burn it in 1990, the massive red star atop the spire was replaced by a Bulgarian flag, and the building today houses government offices.
The map was reportedly created by Dimitar Tomov, an artist and member of a dissident Human Rights organization who had been imprisoned under the Communist regime. https://m.reddit.com/r/bulgaria/comments/fiepm/hi_bulgarian_redditors_can_you_tell_me_the_story/, accessed August 15, 2016.
