- This map dramatically illustrates the threat of Germany's expansionist goals. It shows a Germany in 1950 occupying Austria-Hungary, parts of Russia, Holland, Belgium, Denmark and the Balkans - a total population of 250 million people. Interestingly, this map has apparently been used to make the same point on at least three different occasions.
As the text verso (ID #2108.02) states, it was first printed in Glasgow and distributed to members of Parliament in 1909 at the time of fierce debate in Britain over how many dreadnoughts (battleships) to build to counter the growing threat of German naval rearmament. ("'We want eight, and we won't wait,' coined by the Conservative M.P. George Wyndham, was the slogan of the hour." Marder 2013.)
This version was likely produced in 1918, as World War I neared an end. It urges (verso) imposition of a harsh peace in which "the German malefactors individually, and the German people collectively, are made to drink the cup of expiation to TO THE DREGS." (The card calls for postage of a half-penny, and Britain increased the long-standing half-penny rate on post cards to one penny in June 1918.)
And a third version was published in March 1938, warning once more of German intentions in the run up to World War II. http://digital.wolfsonian.org/WOLF055342/00001, accessed February 10, 2017.
