- Notes:
- This map was published in Yank, the Army Weekly, celebrating Germany's surrender in May 1945. The upper map, "High Tide October 1942," shows virtually all of Europe, along with portions of North Africa, in Nazi black. "The Nazi blitz by October, 1942, had enveloped Europe, overrun Western Russia and was sending spearheads from the Crimea and Egypt to seal off the Near East and the Mediterranean Sea." The lower map, "Low Tide 1945," shows the entire map in white, and the Nazi swastika has been replaced with a red question mark over Germany. "The German Armies, stopped first in Russia and Africa, retreated from Italy and France, and the final offensives of the Allies reduced the Nazi 'new order' to a question mark on the map."
