- On June 5, 1967, in the face of rising threats and military mobilization, Israel launched a preemptive strike against Arab forces. By the 10th of June, Israel had achieved a decisive victory in what has become known as the Six-Day War. The collection includes several maps directly reflecting the imbalance at the time between Israel and the Arab states in land, population, and armaments.
ID #2246 is a large poster with three maps on one sheet. Although undated, it likely was issued shortly after the conclusion of the war. The top map shows the relative military power of “Israel and the Arab States” in land area, population, troops, tanks and warplanes, with an inset chart of relative GNP and defense spending. The bottom map shows “The Arab Deployment for Attack 4 June 1967," including troops, tanks, warplanes, warships and missile launching sites - all aimed at Israel. Forces from Algeria, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan are shown to be providing forces supporting those that directly surround Israel: Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. The third map, inset, shows “The Cease-Fire Line 10 June 1967” following the conclusion of the War, as well as the 1949 Armistice Line.
ID #1381, "Israel and the Arab States - Area and Population" (in Hebrew) demonstrates that the area of the Arab states (in green) and their population are vastly larger than Israel. ID #2610 (not yet online) is identical, but its text is in English. Both maps include 1969 data from an annual periodical, and they were likely published in 1970. The use of English on most of these maps suggests that they were intended to reach an audience beyond Israel.
The Collection includes a number of maps related to Arab-Israeli conflicts. Search > "Israel*".
