- Notes:
- An early cold-war map illustrating a Time Magazine article entitled "What Does Russia Want?" Views of Eastern Europe and Asia from a perspective dominated by the Soviet Union, shown in bright red. Red rays throughout Eastern Europe and the borders with China show "Quarantined" areas. Dark red dots illustrate "Infected" countries, including France, Italy and Norway. Lighter red dots show "Exposed" states: India, Spain and most of the Middle East.
The publisher of Time Magazine, along with Life and Fortune, was Henry Luce, the most powerful American media figure of his era and a fierce anti-communist. Baughman 2001, 1-5. Robert M. Chapin was an artist and long-time “Chief Cartographer” for Time.
