- In September 1944, Allied armies captured the vital port of Antwerp in operating condition, and plans were immediately put in place to make Antwerp the central staging point for the remaining war in Europe and the assault on Germany. Beginning in late October, the Germans launched what became thousands of V-1 "buzz bombs" intended to cripple or destroy the port. This map, published shortly after the end of the war, illustrates the success of "Antwerp X," a secret joint anti-aircraft command of American, British and Polish forces established to shoot down the incoming rockets. The two maps side by side illustrate dramatically the success of the mission. The date is estimated.
Following the end of World War II, many military units issued decorative maps of their areas of operation intended to commemorate their service. The collection includes several other examples: ID #2116, 69th Infantry Division (1945); ID #2280.01-.02, XIX Corps (1945). Virtually all of these maps were issued either immediately after the end of the war or in connection with a later reunion of the unit. One such map in the collection is particularly unusual and interesting, because it was produced in October 1944, while the unit was still heavily engaged in battle. ID #1320.01-.02, XIX Corps in Action: From D-Day (6 June 1944) to Germany. This map was therefore part of the continuing effort to maintain morale.
