- Japan as an evil spider, whose web encompasses the Dutch East Indies. This map is on the cover of a pamphlet produced by the Dutch government documenting years of subversion by the Japanese against the former Dutch colonies in the East, later incorporated into the Dutch Empire. The frontispiece of the pamplet recites that because Japan "has now acquired technical science from the West and has placed it in the service of violence . . . , Japan has branded herself among the nations as a country that knows only one law: the law of the jungle."
The spider and its web have been widely used in political maps, for example, by Germany to describe the British and Soviets; by the U.S. to describe the Nazis; and by the Dutch to describe the Japanese . Search > "spider."
