- Notes:
- This pictorial map with Portuguese captions is not only "unusual and very rare" (Curtis 2016, 159), but of mysterious origin. It bears no date, no author, no publisher or place of publication. The Soviet Union is depicted as a brutal, primitive (ragged and barefoot) force, pillaging Europe, burning churches and cities and enslaving those in the Ukraine and the Baltic States. Its only ally is Britain. Germany's square-jawed, clean-shaven forces lead the defense, supported by virtually every other European nation - Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Rumania. (Those supporting the Germans were apparently "volunteer brigades of the SS." Ibid. They were certainly not the defeated governments of Western Europe.) Portugal is the only exception; its soldier turns away from the fight, looking out to sea. The date is estimated from the events depicted.
One authority has identified the Portuguese as the source of this map, explaining it as an artifact of Antonio Salazar's "complex balancing act" - seeking to protect his nation's ancient alliance with Britain without accommodating the hated Nazis. Ibid. On the other hand, it could as well be a Nazi product, an effort to persuade the Portuguese to join the anti-Soviet coalition.
For another anonymous pro-German map in Portuguese, see ID #2358 (1941).
