- This is one in a series of maps in a pamphlet entitled "The War in Maps 1939/40," the archetype of "the justification of German war aims published by the German Library of Information in New York between 1939 and 1941." The German Library's publications like this one were "replete with propaganda maps developed out of German geopolitics, creating a new form of persuasive cartography." Pickles 2015, 1402.
In fact, the German Library's work plays an important role in the history of persuasive cartography because it was the focus of a widely-read contemporaneous article by American sociologist Hans Speier, who was working at the time on the Research Project on Totalitarian Communication. In a blunt and powerful paper entitled “Magic Geography,” Speir attacked propaganda maps produced by Nazi Germany, using as examples publications of the German Library. Among other things, Speier quoted the introduction to "The War in Maps 1939/40," in which the editor asserted that "incomprehensible" and "hazy impressions gained by laymen" are "revealed as simple illustrations of geopolitics" by the German maps. Speier 1940, 313. By exploiting and manipulating the process of mapping, Speier said, the propagandist “turn[s] geography into a kind of magic, * * * borrows the prestige of science and at the same time violates its spirit.” Ibid. 313, 330.
The collection includes other publications of the German Library in New York: ID ##2059, 2063 ("Allied Intrigue in the Low Countries"); ID #2273 ("The German Reich 1939").
For the earlier German-language version from which the English-language maps were taken, see ID ## 1301.01-.05, " Der Krieg 1939/40 in Karten." For a later German-language version, see ID ##1303.01-.04, "Der Krieg 1939/41 in Karten." For an excellent analysis of these maps, see Palsky 2022.
