- Notes:
- A map published by Standard Oil of New York promoting automobile travel to Long Island with "amiable crassness" and "carto-kitsch." Allen 2014, 369, 370. A traditional road map of the New York metropolitan area and western Long Island is on the other side of the map. This side shows the eastern half of Long Island, with an inset pictorial map of the entire Island: "118 Miles of Recreation and Romance." This map is dense with pictures, mostly answering the promise of "Recreation": amusement parks at Coney Island, swimming at Jones Beach, golf, horse racing, polo, fishing, tennis, hunting, etc. Other attractions include food (clams, oysters, potatoes, cranberries, duck), as well as a monuments, museums and historic sites.
The traditional road maps includes symbols in keeping with the theme, prominently displaying the locations of beaches, golf courses, yacht clubs and "flying fields." For an oil company promotion, "the map is unusual in showing the route of the Long Island Railroad and its individual stations. Not surprisingly, the line depicting the route of the railroad is fainter than the line indicating the least important roads, and no mention of the railroad is made in the legend of the map." Allen 369. For the opposite perspective, see ID #2049, the Long Island Railroad Co. map "Buy Homes on Long Island!" (1884).
