Notes:
This German map from 1937 purports to show the views of the Czech nationalist Hanus Kuffner for the dismemberment of Germany. Kuffner had "published a pamphlet with maps which argued that only a great Czech state in Central Europe would have the necessary military strength to ensure future peace." Herb 1997, 18.
Any map suggesting the dismemberment of Germany was fodder for domestic propaganda use. See ID #1299, Kaufman, Germany Must Perish, and ID #2045, Diewerge, The Map Shows the Planned Dismemberment of Germany.
Rupert von Schumacher was a leading practitioner of German "suggestive cartography," and undertook in the 1930s "to develop a theory of design and a grammar of geopolitical symbology." Herb 2015, 541. He published "a framework for designing geopolitical maps for two different audiences," those scientifically trained and the general public, along with "a catalog of 130 symbols classified under eleven subject headings." Ibid. See also Herb 1997, 154-57.
