This World War I propaganda map, aimed at German troops, reports on the victory of allied forces under American General John J. Pershing in the battle of Saint-Mihiel. As shown on the map, German forces had occupied and defended a "salient" (pocket) into the allied lines south of Verdun, impeding transportation and communications. Pershing launched a well-planned attack on September 12, 1918, using primarily American troops with some French and with early air support. The attack caught the German forces in the course of pulling back their artillery, which allowed the allies to proceed more rapidly than planned; by the following day, they had recaptured the salient.
The caption at the top of the leaflet reads, "Held 4 Years by Germans - Taken by Americans in Only 27 Hours." The text at the bottom reads, "390 sq kilometers - 15,000 prisoners."
