This map illustrates a compendium of state voting laws affecting women. In her Introduction to the book, Harriot Stanton Blatch begins (at ix) by stressing that "This report gives expression to no opinions; it is but an abridged citation of laws regulating the political rights of women presented state by state." Based on a brief summary of the statutes set out in the book, Ms. Blatch demonstrates and concludes (at xii) that "The American woman is a political pariah."
This is one of the first suffrage maps to show those states granting women the vote in white, rather than black. For details on the origin of the suffrage map and its critical importance in gaining the vote for women, see Notes for ID #1193 "Votes for Women a Success."
