- Notes:
- This promotional map from the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce uses an unusual cropped image to support the argument that the city has a unique - or at least preferred - "Strategic Position" geographically. From the map, Berkeley appears to be a most convenient way to access Sacramento and Stockton - as well as a short route to Japan, The Orient and South America. Extensive text adjoining the map and on the verso, ID #1168.02, extoll the city's virtues, including the fact that its "location on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay directly opposite the Golden Gate places it without a peer among the cities of the world."
For two somewhat similar maps, see ID #1181, Map Showing Geographical and Central Position of United States for Distribution of Products (1915), and ID #1152, a promotional map for the city of Tacoma, Washington (1906).
Oakland, Berkeley's East Bay neighbor, was using maps at the same time to advance its own strategic position. See ID #2365.
