- Notes:
- This polemic map illustrates "The Proportion of Convictions for Drunkenness Relative to the Population of the Counties and County Boroughs in One Year," based on U.K. government statistics. Each little bottle represents one conviction for drunkenness for every 10,000 in the County population. The text concludes that the map "afford[s] a most remarkable proof of the fact" that "The further north one goes the greater the increase in insobriety." The author recognizes that London is an exception, but otherwise notes that "in the mining and industrial districts the percentage becomes heavy."
The inset illustrations are of "Leading Opponents of the Licensing Bill," Sir Thomas Dewar "The Great Distiller," Lord Iveagh of Guinness's, Lord Burton of Bass's and Mr. EW. Giffard, Director of Barclay Perkins (a Brewery that eventually merged with Anchor and later Courage).
